Math in My Life
By: Charles Petersen
Math affects my life in many complex and diverse ways. Math is the basic
foundation of our society and therefore our lives. I use math every single day, in almost
everything I do; there is no way I could live through a day without using some math
consciously or subconsciously.
Math is the only true universal language. Math can be understood by any sentient
life in the universe. This is true because in order to become advanced you have to have
some sort of mathematical system.
What I think is the coolest part about math is that it can be used in so many ways
in our daily lives. For example, right now as I am typing this report millions upon
millions of math sequences are being used by the computer I am typing this on to
produce what you are seeing. In one of my favorite and probably most useful classes,
drafting, we use math all of the time to make precise measurements and convert fractions
to decimals, etc..
The thing that makes me want to take as many math classes as possible is that
math gives me an edge in practically every other field. If you have greater math skills
than another person in your field it is most likely that you will be able to accomplish an
assignment superior to his/hers. Also math, is one of the number one considerations of
college boards and employers. Besides all of the ways that math is useful, some math is
actually fun. I personally like doing geometry because of all of the real world aspects
and how logical it is. Math can also be fun and useful in programming computers. When
you program a computer, you use almost pure math. Not only that but its pretty cool to
see the results, etc., too.
Another important way that I use numbers in my life is when I read a clock or
calendar. Without math and numbers it is almost impossible to make an appointment or
read a clock/calendar to get there at the correct time.
My goals in math are pretty far off but I believe that eventually, through hard
work and determination, I will be able to attain them. One of my goals is to get a 4.0 in
math until I go to college. Another is to take calculus as a senior. Yet another is to go to
college and take more math classes that are core requirements because several of the
careers I am considering require high levels of math.
